News About This Theater

Built as a single-screen and opened July 7, 1969 with “MacKenna’s Gold”. By October 1973 it had been divided in half. It was of the era when Loews was decorating with the turquoise and purple color scheme, black-and-white graphic on the lobby wall and script-style ‘Loews’ on the signs.

Closed in October 1991, the building currently houses retail.

Somewhere in the mid-80s it quietly closed and was turned into retail. I believe a Gap is now in the space (it’s within the mall proper). Mankind suffered no real loss.

A stand-alone, deco-marqueed Regal multiplex was built on the edge of the mall property a decade or so ago, and another multi-screen (4 or 5) complex also remains in a strip plaza facing the mall

I know this theater made it until Summer 1989 as I saw “Ghostbusters II” there as a young lad. I think it closed just as the Boulevard Centre was opening in the early 1990’s.

After looking through the Youngstown Vindicator archives, the cinema’s last day of operation was October 24th, 1991 . The last film that played there were Ricochet and The Super.

Eastwood Mall, according to their current directory still has 2 theaters in the complex … Encore Cinema – Great East Plaza which is part of the Eastwood Mall complex, and Regal Cinema in the mall with stadium seating and 14 screens.
