Uptown Theater celebrates 75th birthday

WASHINGTON, DC — Without much fanfare, Washington DC’s last operating single screen but premier theater celebrated its 75th anniversary on October 29th. The theatre opened back in 1936 showing the movie “Cain and Abel” starring Clark Gable. A recent radio report from station WTOP can be heard here. Happy 75th Uptown!

Group hopes to restore Orpheum
CHATHAM, MA — In honor of Chatham’s 300th Anniversary next year, the newly-formed Orpheum Theatre Project is looking to raise money to renovate the Orpheum Theatre back to life. Open since 1916, it has spent the last 25 years as a number of different pharmacies. The hope is to build a new 50 seat art-house cinema and a 160 seat main theatre in its place.

Movie tax panned
ROCKFORD, IL — Senior Editor Chuck Sweeny of the Rockford Register Star laments a possible new movie tax. Looking for new ways to generate revenue, locals leaders are mulling over a tax for entertainment venues such as bowling alleys as well as movie theaters.

New theater opens in Ozark
OZARK, MO — A new theater is coming to the Ozarks with the opening of the B&B Ozark Friday. Features include leather seats, digital projection and the largest theater having a 53 foot screen.

Lake Theatre celebrates 75 years with Classic Film Series

OAK PARK, IL — The historic Lake Theatre, at 1022 Lake Street, is showcasing a Classic 1936 Film Series in celebration of its milestone 75th anniversary. Each film is presented on the second Monday of every month, at 1 PM and 7 PM. The next film in the series, “After the Thin Man,” is slated for Monday, November 14, 2011. Movie admission is $5, and tickets are available at the Lake Theatre box office.
This movie in particular is an example of the art deco period with its sets and high style clothes. To learn more about art deco architecture, style and what we can still appreciate, a member of the Chicago Art Deco Society will have information available before and after the movie.

Movie theater at Opry Mills to reopen week of Nov. 18
NASHVILLE, TN — Heavily damaged in the flood last year, the Regal Opry Mills 20 & IMAX is reopening next week. There will be charity events in the days leading up to the opening of this anchor tenant of the mall.

State funds allow Colonial Theatre to expand
PHOENIXVILLE, PA — Thanks to the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, the Colonial Theatre has received $250,000 in state funding. They’ll use the money to expand and make the theatre a more viable option for a variety of entertainment.

IMAX reports strong third quarter
The Star reports another healthy quarter for IMAX. Their revenue was significantly boosted by the new Harry Potter and Transformers movies. With the new Spiderman and Batman movies next year, they anticipate even bigger results.
