Anchorage’s 4th Avenue Theatre endangered again

ANCHORAGE, AK — The 4th Avenue Theatre in Anchorage, an Art Moderne gem,is once again at threat.

Alaskans are very close to losing the historic 4th Avenue Theatre in downtown Anchorage. Anchorage residents grew up attending movies at the 4th Avenue Theatre. The 4th Avenue Theatre will always hold a special place in many Alaskans hearts. Demolition or inappropriate redevelopment of Anchorage’s only historic theatre is unacceptable.

A recent decision by the buildings current owner has effectively stalled the Municipality of Anchorage’s plans to restore and redevelop the theatre with the assistance of the Anchorage Downtown Partnership. In February 2007, a local architect was selected to conduct investigations necessary to prepare design and construction documents to restore the auditorium and public spaces of the 4th Avenue Theatre. The theater owner’s decision not to transfer ownership to the Anchorage Downtown Partnership has stalled the project.

Interior photos and the rest of the story are at AIA.

  • Science on Screen at the Coolidge Corner Theatre Presents “Night of the Living Dead”

BROOKLINE, MA — Science on Screen at the Coolidge Corner Theatre takes a dark twist with a presentation of “Night of the Living Dead”, George A. Romero’s 1968 genre-defining zombie horror film on Monday, April 13 at 7:00 pm. This unusual program is the “brainchild” of psychiatrist Steven C. Schlozman, a self-described zombie film fanatic and pop culture enthusiast who will join us before the film to explore the theoretical neuroscience of zombies and the psychological effects they have on others.

What would the brain of a zombie look like? Why are zombies so (physically) unbalanced? Why are they always hungry? Why do normal people, in the absence of being infected, descend to sub-cortical zombie behavior in almost every zombie movie? And just what is it about the concept of the living dead that continually fascinates audiences? Zombie fans will have lots to chew on…
“They’re coming to get you, Barbara!”

  • Loew’s Jersey call for restoration volunteers - Saturday, March 21

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Even as our season of classic films and other events continues, Friends of the Loew’s is moving forward with a number of volunteer projects to improve our Loew’s Jersey Theatre.

    So, this coming Saturday …

For weeks, several FOL volunteers have been working to remove decades of old bubble gum from more than two thousand metal seat parts from the Loew’s balcony. It may not sound very glamorous, it is nevertheless very important. Now, the next step is to disassemble those parts. All of this is in preparation for re-painting those parts, re-installing the seats and — FINALLY! — reopening the Loew’s balcony! We need three people to use pneumatic wrenches (the kind you see in auto-repair shops) to remove the bolts and disassemble the parts. It’s not really hard, and no special skills are needed. Come join the Balcony Team at the Loew’s!
