Sony and RealD to provide 3D digital cinema system

Sony Electronics and RealD have announced that they will be working together to provide 3D digital cinema systems for exhibitors. The system is designed for Sony’s 4K digital cinema projectors.
Sony Electronics and RealD are working together to provide exhibitors with 3D digital cinema systems that combine a single Sony 4K projector and its new 3D dual lens adapter with RealD technology, including a specially designed optical filter tuned for the projector, resulting in the ability to deliver crisp 3D images to screens up to 55 feet in width.

Sony and RealD have also entered into a separate agreement that gives RealD the exclusive right to purchase and distribute Sony’s 3D lens adapter for use with polarized filter systems in Sony digital cinema projection system 3D deployments in the United States, Canada and Europe. In addition to the Sony 3D adapter, RealD will provide hardware and software, including its Cinema System and 3D EQ “Ghostbuster” technology, for 3D playback on Sony 4K digital cinema systems worldwide.
• Science on Screen at the Coolidge Corner Theatre

BROOKLINE, MA — The Coolidge Corner Theatre will present “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” Stanley Kramer’s 1967 film about interracial marriage, on Monday, March 2 at 7:00 pm as part of its popular Science on Screen series. Before the film, noted social psychologist Mahzarin Banaji, a pioneer in the study of unconscious bias, will give a talk on the science of prejudice.

Made at a time when mixed-race marriage was still illegal in 16 states in America, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” aimed to debunk racial stereotypes. When young Joanna Drayton brings her new fiance home to San Francisco to meet her liberal parents, their progressive leanings are put to the test when they discover the man their daughter has chosen to settle down with is black. Sidney Poitier stars as the successful and respected Dr. John Wade Prentice, who challenges the preconceived notions of Mr. and Mrs. Drayton (Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn) during dinner one evening. The film earned Oscars for Hepburn and screenwriter William Rose.

Friends of Fox to host Pomona Fox re-opening

POMONA, CA — The towering icon of Downtown Pomona’s Fox Theater will illuminate the night sky once again, as Friends of the Pomona Fox, a non-profit organization, will present “Fox First Night!", a fundraiser to be one of the first events held in the theater since its redevelopment and revival into the 21st century. The dinner event will be held Saturday, April 18th, 2009, with an opening reception to kick-off the evening at 6:00PM.

The Pomona Fox Theater has stood for over 70 years in Pomona, and served as the top choice for Hollywood’s sneak preview screenings in the early 1930’s as well as a frequent remote radio talk show location for Bob Hope, Desi Arnaz and other celebrities. The current restoration allows for great entertainment and event possibilities, in which “Fox First Night!" anticipates to showcase in the event, amongst activities celebrating its restored grandeur.

Since its glory days, the Fox has suffered damage to significant historical architectural and structural elements. The wear of time, the havoc of dance raves, and its needs to meet modern occupational standards, has all contributed to the compromise of the theater’s original features, such as the concession counter built in 1938, row seating, chandeliers, fixtures, and classic murals. This is where Friends of the Pomona Fox is requesting the help of the community in the preservation and restoration of the authentic character of the Fox Theater. Its rich history applies not only to its immediate surrounding of the Pomona Valley, but also to the beginnings of the film industry in Hollywood.
