Box Office Preview: X-Files Debut vs. The Dark Knight

Fox and Fox Mulder will duke it out with Warner Bros. and The Dark Knight this weekend for box office supremacy. If the previous week’s tallies for TDK are any indication, though, it may not be a close race with the Christopher Nolan-directed film aiming to cross the $300 million mark this weekend, according to Variety.
Sony’s comedy Step Brothers will also bow this weekend, while Universal’s Mamma Mia looks to grab additional counter programming dollars after its $27.7 million opening last weekend, the highest grossing opening ever for a musical. According to Variety, Step Brothers will open in 3,094 theaters, while “X-Files” gets a slightly larger launch in 3,185 houses.
Good luck to Mulder and Scully and Farrell and Reilly … and to anyone looking for The Dark Knight IMAX tickets.
Will The Dark Knight break $300 million this weekend?

State Theate expansion may begin soon
CULPEPER, VA — After being announced almost two years ago, the expansion plans for the State Theatre might finally come to fruition. Following that, it would become a mixed-use entertainment venue.
In the planning, design and fundraising phases for several years, rehab of the 70-year-old movie house on Main Street is about to get physical.
The State Theatre Foundation comes before the Town Architectural Review Board today for approval to begin the estimated $10 million rehab.
“We are getting very close,” said Chris Hamilton, chairman of the foundation’s building committee. “We are actually in negotiations with our contractor and when that is complete it won’t be long” before construction begins, he said.

Royal Oak Music Theatre celebrates 80th!

ROYAL OAK, MI — The Royal Oak Music Theatre will celebrate its 80th Anniversary with a showing of the Chaplin classic, “The Circus”, also a product of 1928.
When Kunsky Theatre first opened its doors on Fourth Street on March 6, 1928, the demand to get inside was so great, more people were turned away than were able to get inside the 1,700-seat movie theater.
A little more than 80 years later, owners of what’s still a local hot spot — now named the Royal Oak Music Theatre — want to re-create that night with a special anniversary event.

Another new theater in the works in the Bronx
BRONX, NY — Here we go again…Monday’s NY Daily News reported that a 14 screen theater is planned for a mixed use development in “The HUB” shopping area on a vacant lot located at East 149th Street at Brook and Bergen Avenues.
The theater chain was not revealed, but I am hoping for somebody other then National Amusements or Regal. Nothing against either of those two chains. It would just be refreshing for another chain not in this area to open up. The developer is Related Properties who have also announced a theater for their Kingsbridge Armory development site on Jerome Avenue, just above Fordham Road.

A look back at Lubbock theater history
LUBBOCK, TX — One man takes a look back in time at some of the forgotten cinemas in Lubbock like the Winchester and the Lindsey.
I arrived in Lubbock in the fall of 1970. One of the first things I did was buy a newspaper and search out the movie ads, at which point I was astonished to find an old Italian western double feature booked at a theater called the State, located on Texas Avenue.
That would become my first movie experience in Lubbock.
Weeks would pass before I found the Winchester on 50th Street, by far Lubbock’s most impressive modern theater.
