Will the dome open once more?
SAN JOSE, CA — Fans came out in droves last Sunday for the final screening at the Century 21. The famous domed theatre is supposed to be torn down but there’s still some hope left it will have a future.

Performing arts centers planned for former bakery building in Carteret
CARTERET, NJ — Almost 50 years as a clothing factory and bakery, the Ritz Theater will entertain more. Plans are in the works to restore the theatre and show live performances. No timeline is set but the plan is to have live performances.

Boyd Theatre settlement reached
PHILADELPHIA, PA — The 12 year battle for the Boyd is lost so the preservationists entered into a settlement agreement for what they could save before all but the facade is demolished.
Certainly a sad end for this story but the Friends of the Boyd should be applauded for all their years of dedication to saving this treasure. At least a small portion will be preserved for future generations.

Improvements at the Caldwell

CALDWELL, NJ — The acquisition of Clearview by Bow Tie last year may not have been great for all locations but the Caldwell has certainly benefited. The theatre housed in a 100-year-old building now has digital projectors in all 4 of its theaters and new paint inside and out.

Changes at the Mission
PORTLAND, OR — There are going to be more upgrades at the Mission Theater but not necessarily those that will make it a first run theater. They plan on updating the sound, screen size, and seating in a move to make it a permanent second run theater instead of its most recent incarnation of special event space.

Strand Theater shuts its doors
MANITOWOC, WI — The Strand Theater closed Sunday but for a change it wasn’t because of lack of digital equipment. In fact, they purchased new projectors just last year. Unfortunately, they found out shortly thereafter that Carmike was building a new 10-screen theater on the other side of town.

Golden Age Revival Theater opens in Westwood
WESTWOOD, NJ — After more than a year of anticipation, the new repertory Rosebud Theater opened last week.
Owner Ray Walsh says of the people of Westwood, “Not only does this town have some real charm, but we were really overwhelmed by the support we received from the people here.”
Walsh, a retired scout for the New York Giants, says that he received countless e-mails and positive comments encouraging his business venture. “It was really nice to see that people welcomed us here,” he says of The Rosebud.

Movie Theater in Fairmont set to reopen
FAIRMONT, MN — Two and half years after closing, the Lakes Cinema is making a pleasant return. Locals had been clamoring to get their theatre back and thanks to a rental option for digital equipment, it’s viable again.

Rialto up for sale
DENISON, TX — The Rialto Theater is on the market again after its current owner spent three years renovating it up to today’s standards. The 94 year-old theatre is currently listed for just under $225K and one of the last classic theaters in the area.
