At the same time I remember long lines in the very bitter cold for Love Story at Loew’s State 1. Only times I saw a real line at a Times Square theater. I don’t remember lines for The Godfather. There may have been but I can’t recall. Also it was playing at both Loew’s State theaters so it was constantly allowing in thousands of people.

This is when I started going into the city on my own as a boy. I remember this marquee. I didn’t go to see this because the reviews were so bad. A block over on 44th street Hello Dolly, Fiddler on the Roof and Promises Promises were still in their original runs. All on the same blook! Fortunately in January of ‘71 Warner rereleased My Fair Lady here. It was in 70MM but unfortunately it was continuous perfs without an intermission. Beautiful marquee especially of course at night. Not as elaborate as '64 but still one of the best marquees I ever saw. The marquee still had its beautiful neon trim. I think Orch and mezz were one price (($3.50?) and the balc another ($3.00?) Fifty cents was a lot so I sat in the balc.

molto strano che una societa' italiana di Rhode Island voleva presentare questo film. Non posso immaginarlo per quei chi conoscono poco di sa reputazione e contenuto.

Saw Noi Vivi at the Bleeker Street Cinema in the Village back in the 80s. Wonderful film with two incredibly charismatic actors. It seemed to come out of nowhere and then disappear. It should be a revival house staple but I don’t think it is.

Looks like the borders were modified for Panavision.

So they turned one of Hollywood’s greatest movie palaces into a black box screening room. Who was the genius architect who came up with this? They couldn’t restore it after the earthquake. Gee it’s a wonder El Capitan and Grauman’s still stand. And with a postage size screen a 30th of the size of its D150 screen. You figure the people who come up with this hate movie theaters.

This couldn’t be a recent photo. There is as much junk in the lobby as there is now in the auditorium. As if the theater was being run by a hoarder.

Loew’s State across the street from the Victoria. A new photo for me.

Biggest advance sale in Music Hall history up till that point. Disney and Easter at Radio City a no-brainer.

Was Friends of the Loew’s Jersey able to make some sort of agreement with the new entertainment group to continue showing classic films? They were the ones who saved this place and maintained it for years. Without them this would have been long lost New Jersey history.

I saw that spectacular billboard of TMMITFM posted by Cinest when I was a boy. If you look carefully you can see it is 3D. And planes were bobbing up and down and propellers and legs were spinning.

This isn’t NY Loew’s Capitol. I can’t even make out the name of the theater. But clearly a first run downtown house. But where?

Great news about removal of false arch. Now to remove those god awful speakers and truly restore the place like they claim they’ve done multiple times and it was nothing but lies.

One of the very very few decent films the Music Hall played in the 70s. It was such a relief. I thought finally the Music Hall shows a watchable film!

So the Rockettes are kicking while Nome burns. Well why not. And Dame Edith Evans is also on stage appearing in the finale.

First night bombed. It was in Variety at the time. People for some reason were confused and thought the whole house was for the charity event.

The bluray is beautiful. Not a very interesting script and Olivier is for some reason completely without charm but Monroe is at her most luminescent. Must have been wonderful seeing her on the Music Hall screen. I think it was Thorndyke who said to Olivier during filming “She’s stealing the film from you.‘ And does she ever.

Premiere at Radio City Music Hall on youtube. Kwan, Rodgers, Celeste Holm, and Henny Youngman being politically incorrect. Shot of orchestra during overture of stage show. Wonderful bluray out in stereo with one of the best opening title sequences ever. Got to see it at Music Hall in the late 70s when they had morning movie musical revivals. A couple of R and H’s most beautiful songs.

Lord Jim must have had an incredibly short run at Loew’s State. I remember seeing it at the drive-in that summer.
