What great marquee “ARTHUR” any time i could slip into Cinema III after a hard day and catch a few minutes of that Dudley Moore Classic I was okay for another shift.
Are you telling me someone approved “Sgt.Pepper’s” to be processed in 70mm! That was suppose to be our BIG summer Hit.I think we played maybe two weeks.
In my years in the Business 1974-1980 and then 1982-84 I always thought the ratings were a joke.Thankgoodness in my days Moms would call and ask about a PG movie, which i my day could be for Adults,{watch Billy Jack with a PG rating and tell me you want a 10 year old to watch it}.Of Course,Today one can’t get ahold of a manager to even talk about a rating. And having seen some these new managers I don’t think they could carry on an Adult conversation.I think I got out before the PG-13 rating came out.VINCENT is right on the money.Surprized more old theatre managers have not commented on this very good topic.
+Not that it would ever happen, but in the perfect world all these big 20 plexes would be no more.We would go back to single screen theatres, have showmanship that has been lacking since the middle 70’s and nice size screens. We don’t need IMAX or any other flashy film conversion.Just a simple movie with a good story.Oh,I forgot Hollywood hasn’t had a decent film in years.Yep,In a perfect world Movie ads would return in Friday’s paper, each theatre fighting for your attention with nice size ads,not phonebook ads that someone mention here on CT.Yep,Most of you don’t even have idea what I am writing about and that is fine I ,along with others from my years in the business know what I mean.
So they opened with"HARRY and WALTER go to NEW YORK" what a disppointment for a new theatre. We played"HARRY and WALTER" for maybe two weeks to empty seats.Elliot Gould and James Caan were the stars, right off the top of my head.
Cinema Treasures, I messed up. I drove by the PALACE theatre today and a local commerical Builder had turned the Palace into Office space. The last time i drove by the Palace all that was up was four walls and and the stage and fly area above.I assumed, and i shouldn’t have, that the city finished tearing down the walls. It would be hard to tell it was a theatre except for the rear with the stage and fly system still there. But the Palace is still up as office space.Sorry, for the wrong information.
I was never a projectionist but having spent seven years running theatres I always had respect for the guys in the booth and glad i got out before all the Manager/ projectionist crap came up.
Eric F, It did have a warning tag by the PG rating{may be Too intense for younger children}.Sounds like you had pretty decent parents.I watched for years parents bringing kids to R-rated movies at theatres I managed.Couldn’t believe it.“COMING HOME” lets bring two pre-teens with mom and dad.
Thanks KenMC for the pictures.
Thanks KenMc and Chuck1231.I enjoy each theatre you guys put on CT.
