I know this was a SINGLE screen unless there are two MONTGOMERY MALLS in that area. “WHO IS HARRY KELLERMAN? AND WHY IS HE SAYING THOSE TERRIBLE THINGS ABOUT ME?” what movie title and and it alone I know was playing there in the early 70’s.
You think if Loews had a policy on X -rated you guys wouldn’t have shown X. I think I got out before the NC-17 rating. I am pretty sure GCC never played one Nc-17, however,I know Plitt played a NC-17 movie at National Hills or either it was UA at the time. Some crazy foreign film I think. Can’t think of the title.
Most theatres I worked at had a cut off with about 10 or 15 seats not sold, just for the room. when I got to GCC there was no such thing has a cut off number we sold every seat in the cinema,If dates didn’t want to split up once we got to singles{I ain’t kidding} then we pull single folks out of line and put them in a seat.SAVE A SEAT at GCC in Augusta,Georgia? FORGET IT!
i have read on a few Loews Theatre sites that CT members have written that Loews would not show X-rated fare,I wish i could remember now on what Loews theatre i read that post.
I have the pressbook from “HEAVY TRAFFIC” we showed it on a Late show with a R-rating.Don’t know if it had been cut or changing times and morals.
I see that “BONNIE&CLYDE” played almost a month there.I have read several film histories,Including Warren Beatty’s Bio stating in alot of theatres in the U.S. said it was pulled because of poor grosses, put on the Drive-in circuit and it found an audience then re-released to first run theatre to do great business. This Columbus theatre was a rarity in the mid 60’s.
In today’s rushed world of 40 plexs,What is an usher? My last year was 1983 in the business.GCC employeed ushers and often Managers and Assistants would like Tlsloews wrote about directing people. When I drop my kids at the local movieplex it looks like a mad house. No Ushers and certainly not the type we had from 1974 that did not mind to tell people to shut-up during a movie, but we never had that big of a problem.in those days going to the movie theatre one behaved and usually dressed like they were going to church.Today, they dress the same for church as to do a movie.Said it a 100 times glad i got out in 1983.
“SOUND OF MUSIC” played 133 weeks. I can’t even comment on that, but i shouldn’t ever complain about having to play it for a couple of weeks back in the 70’s, I pity the poor ushers dealing with the old ladies.
Remember Ted Turner bought a six plex in Atlanta and on one screen “GONE WITH THE WIND” ran everyday and of course you had to pay to see it.It just can’t be done when one can buy a classic for almost under ten dollars and not have to drive. That is what killed the late shows i am sure ,even though i got out of business way before VHS hit no sense in booking a good late show when people probably own it.
Small towns i notice tear down theatres for parking.Wilkes Theatre on CT same reason. Today the historical society is sorry they let the Wilkes fall in WASHINGTON,Ga.

Joe what a story. If only “Poesideon Adventure” had been on the screen. I think i have read it all now.

I SAW the Jet UaGirl wrote about in the intro.Think i even took a picture. That was a nice section of Charlotte in those days.
Looks just like the one here in Augusta,Ugly as sin, 27 screens. What a mess.

Tlsloews, hope you see these great pictures.
I keep reading that LOEWS had a policy of no X-rated movies in their theatres. I counted several, unless they were re-cut to the R-rating.

The screen is built just like the WOODZO DRIVE-IN in Newport,Tenn.only the WOODZO was painted yellow.
Wasn’t this a single screen in 1971?
They were going to tear down the FOX in Atlanta for a office building like New york and Atlanta need another high rise.
Tlsloews, another LOEWS theatre.“INCHON” and “GAME OF DEATH” two stinkers one ripping off GEN.MacAuthur and the other a Bruce Lee mess.
Nick, I found the movie ad if you see this i will be mailing it down when i get to a printer.“THE BODY SHOP”.
It was an adventure going to work in a theatre, great name.
Theatre artist and Augusta native Davis Cone painted this theatre.
Ed Blank,i am working up a history on the Marrah Theatre and Carolina Theatre in North Augusta,Hopefully I will have them on by weekend.
