Joe Vogel, Thanks SO MUCH for putting that old story on FOREST HILLS ON THIS SITE. I meant to thank you several months ago but did not. all i had was what was in my mind.It looked pretty much what i Remembered. Pretty sure the lettering was all in red. Thanks so much.
Hey, Did you do the DREAMLAND and OVERTON THEATRES? Nick, Ray sent two more theatre stories one is THE TRI-CITY DRIVE-In and SKYLAND ARTS CINEMA. I would like to send them down for you to put on CT,But i don’t want keep sending stuff down all the time when you plenty of Tampa Theatres to work on.Just let me know when to mail them. Thanks. Ray really likes what you have already done with his Theatres in N.C. .
Nick, It was worth waiting for. I did the same thing at FOREST HILLS DRIVE-In. A projectionist caught me one night sneaking in on the very adult “FANNY HILL” . But i did venture into the conession stand After it went out of business, to find two youngerboys inside looking around and i said, and i remember it like yesterday, “My family owned this Drive-in, What are you two doing here?” I could have gotten an Oscar. They left on their bikes fast!
You should have went on it I am sure you would have found some great stuff like I did back in 1969.
Those were some bad movies to close on.Only"HARDCORE" with George C. Scott was the only half way decent movie. They could have MADE it an event.
Thanks for mention. I do wish you were able to print your pictures and mine. I did go on FOREST HILLS and was able to see what that Drive-in looked like,Pretty much what I thought. I was glad someone had that BOXOFFICE ISSUE. I wish i could get a bit better picture, but i can’t complain.
Robin Mccoy, Who worked at National Hills about the time i got canned at COLUMBIA SQUARE is putting together a reunion. BIll will be there. I told her about CT and she has already posted on NATIONAL HILLS and the IMPERIAL.
Well, thanks for a great story,I do hope more fans will read your very well written stories,Did you minor in Journalism,by any chance?
Thank you Robin for sharing! I only wish about 7 or 8 more employees I thought I knew better would get on CT. Please share ALL you can. Bill invited me down there on the last night and I am still kicking myself for not going. I did go to COLUMBIA SQUARE on the day it closed. even, got myself in the paper!
Tisloews, Everytime i spot a ROGERS-RODGERS theatre I always read about it. I think i might finally have another employee of NATIONAL HILLS THEATRE; Robin ,to submit stories,She is planning a NATIONAL HILLS THEATRE Reunion!!!!!!!!!!
Tislowes,I noticed somewhere where you were surprized LOEWS had drive-ins,I can understand why cause when you think of the grand history behind LOEWS one does not think about DRIVE-INS.
Yeah,Robin. that happened when Jim Neely was the Doorman, but thank goodness no broken glass.
I know Mark lives in Atlanta. He popped in about 4 years ago out of the blue just to visit. Haven’t heard from him since. Please post many stories on OUR GREAT THEATRE.
You know Letterbox movies with the Black masking on certain movies usually scope. People see them on TV and think the bottom and top have been cut, hence the word,LETTERBOX.
Another Late show moviegoer said he was"going To kick my ASS “ for making him stop smoking, After the movie never did see him. Late ShoWs brought out Augusta’s Finest.
Here is one from our late show crowd. I am standing by the back door looking down on our late show crowd when i spot a fellow close to the screen walk behind the curtains time i get down there he has peed all behind the curtain.Drunk as a skunk. Oh the good old late shows.
Chuck, thanks for clearing that up. I have family in the Cumberland Gap area so i would visit the old site.So now its a gas station. I was able to video tape it.
Also visited the TAZEWELL DRIVE-In over the mountain in Tenn. It is on CT.
Is the 4 plex still open in the mall. I couldn’t believe the prices for first run movies! {cheap}
How can anyone say 2001 was boring! Do you have any idea the talent that came from that film. You would have to see 2001 in70mm on a large screen.Well, forget about it.theatres today have SMALL screens.
Had it not been for the craftsmen on that film i would hate to see the direction of sci-fi. This Computer made stuff is the worst thing that happened to the movies.
For one thing it took jobs from behind the camera and it front of the camera.
Yeah,Your right.Last time I drove by the old CHEROKEE theatre it was selling furniture.I have the Skyway Drive in listed in Lafollette, but also was told of the STARLITE DRIVE in there. But I have no idea of its location.
The little twin theatre was still open and being run by Carmike,But really run down from what i could tell for looking outside into the lobby.
It would be a long shot, but if the Lafayette local paper had morgue they might be able to locate the times that Flatt&Scruggs played at the CHEROKEE.At least you could get the ad printed in that day’s issue. But most likely, the paper was a weekly. Still I am sure they ran movie ads.
The old carbon arcs with the 20 minute reels are in the booth. However, one projector was moved from its position.I think they are still in the booth.
Tim Campbell, the stage manager who like to show a film series. They have a nice Video set up,that when Tim ran a movie for me this old theatre dog was impressed since i am pro 35mm film, not discs, but it looked good. HE said LETTERBOX movies cause problems, because people think the movie is cut. I suggested using a masking like we did at GCC when we showed scope.
Tisloews,All i did and you could have done it was save every old BOXOFFICE magazine i would find at work and exploring old theatres. The owner of the KNOX THEATRE passed away .I reprinted a small part of his obit.

Check out GASTON MALL Theatre.I wonder if you ever talked a projectionist into doing what that operator did for us late one night.
