Another interseting point is why they opened another theater on 34th st after they closed the very popular 34th St Showplace on the east side. Every theater that was on 34th st is now gone except the new Loews. I am sure AMC will keep there name as they did with all theother mergers.

The issue witht he religous right is that if it is something that they don’t beleive in it is there choice, but it is none of there business to tell theaters and others what to see. As Vokoban said nobody is forcing them to watch this movie. I have been raised Catholic all my life and they can take some right wing stances on tings and I am sure they may on this movie, but believe me I will be very vocal to them about my feelings and it will not be polite. I think there are good and bad in all races, religous beliefs and sexual orientation. When Brokeback Mountain wins all the other major awards, it will be becuase of artistic talent not subject matter. I am a big movie fan and The Lord Of The Rings to me was junk, but the fact that Hollywood saw fit to award it all the Oscars it did was because they saw something in it that I didn’t. The 3 Lord Of The Rings movies were not my cup of tea, but there were more who felt differently. When I saw Brokeback Mountain Sunday night, 90 % of the audiance was straight couples. The straight population outnumbers the gay population and they sure seem to love this movie and are supporting it.
I saw Brokeback MOuntain last nioght here in Asheville,NC and thought it was done very well. heath Ledgers performance is exceptional and will win him an Oscar and othe awards. Unfortunately, the idiot American Family Association and the right wing Christian groups including the idiot in Washinton should mind there own business. If they don’t want to see a movie because of it’s content, than they should stay home and shut up. If there is a movie I don’t want to see like King Kong, I go see something else and let who wants to see go and enjoy themselves. Sorry if I got on a roll.

From what I can tell, Gigi was the only film to play the Royal. The Palace theater shows going back to a legit theater in 1966 (including What it says in At This Theater),but I remember in 68 and 69 they were showing movies again. It wasn’t until 1970 that they permanantly reopened as a legit theater with Lauren Bacall in Applause.

Actually the Royal now the Jacobs had the roadshow engagement of Gigi. I have a clipping of it in a book of NYTimes movie reviews that I bought in 1978. Interesting that the book At This Theater which is all about the broadway theaters history doesn’t show Gigi as being at the Royal. If I can ever figure out how to scan a pic and put it in here I will.
The one thing I noticed from Howard’s picture is tha masking is different. It never came down below the screen in the past. Maybe they did it becuase they don’t use those beautiful curtains.
The movie is absolutely terrible.I love musicals and loved the broadway show, but this did not transfer well into a movie. Beleive me the people who paid $12.75 to see thismovvie were ripped off. If I was a critic, my review would have statrted like this.
Mel Brooks creattes majoy FLOP in Producers movies. I would have gien it *½ stars and only the half because Will Farrell is the best thing in the movie.
Does anybody know how I stop getting e mails when somebody reponds to this theater? I musty have accidently checked the block one day. I don’t kow if it was Clearview Cinemas or Mel Brooks being a thief, but if I was still living in NYC I would have boycotted and would be picketing the theater. There was no excusse to raise the price for this film. I always loved this theater but would not support this.

It was the Trans Lux East on 3rd Ave Between 57 & 58. Guccione leased it for 1 year and renamed it The Penthouse. After the year Crown took over the theater remdeled it and reopened it as the Crown Gotham.
Howard
The Charles did have masking and offered scope presentaions, Lady Sings The Blues, Once Is Not Enough and a roadshow engagement of The Lion In Winter in 68.
Howard
Just saw your posting from Jan. The Center showed Funny Girl in 70mm as a roadshow engagement in 69. The Hollywood showed Airport and Doctor Dolittle in 70mm
Hopefully Rent will be a hit for the Ziegfeld. The movie is wonderful despite some negative reviews. I would have loved to have seen it at this theater.
I saw it here in NC at a new chain, Epic Theatres which is a top noche chain.(Unlike Carmike The Worst) They have 5 theaters so far and are building more in Florida. They recently purchased a small United Artist theater down the street from where they opened the areas first stadium seat theater.
There was a bunch of theaters in the Tampa area that closed within the last 5 years when AMC came in and built tons of multiplexes. I don’t know if they are still empty but here is the list that I know about.
Carmike Hillsboro 8
Carmike University Collections (Had exclusive showing of The Color Pruple in 1985)
Carmike Main Street 5
United Artists Movies At Mission Bell
AMC Varsity 6
AMC Horizon Park 4
AMC Twin Bay 4
Regal Hollywood 20. This was a stadium theater that Regal closed when it went into bankruptcy less than a year of operation.
I hear they are going condo city there. It also sucks that they are knocking down this theater. I was imminate that a diaster was coming when Frank’s Theaters purchased the chain from Hunt’s. The first year they twined the Blaker, Ocean and quaded the Strand ruining all 4 theaters. I am not sure what happened but they went out of business and were purchased by Hoyts. I know they are back in business.

When did they put in a new screen. I agree they had a huge screen when I lived in NYC 76-82.
HAs this theater reopened? I rememebr when it was a drive in. I lived in NYC and would take the bus to Atlantic City and would pass it all summer.
I felt they made it to slapstick almost like a Three Stoges movie.
So is this theater closed again?

Has there been any word on what will happen with the smaller Loews Theaters like the 72nd St East and 84th St?

THis theater closed in 74 when they moved burlesque to the Apollo on the boardwalk
Who knows what will happen after AMC gets it hands on this theater.

Inside word is that the film isn’t very good and by the looks of the preview I agree. The sets look terrible.
This is one theater that is no great loss if it doesn’t reopen. I am glad I moved from Ft Lauderdale in April.
