Needs to be listed as demolished. Happened between 2008 and 2012, I think.

1970 picture shows 147 as a Montgomery Ward with an ugly metal front. Hard to tell if the second story was already gone. At that point, building to the left was a Ben Franklin, and building to the right an appliance store. I don’t think this got renumbered, but this doesn’t look like a theater at all.

Description needs to be corrected, this was open later than the ‘50s. Page 65 of the NRHP listing for downtown has a circa 1970 photo showing that the façade was covered in white stucco, and a simple triangular marquee with 'Strand’ on a blade at the front was added. Looks like the remodel dates to around 1940-50. At some point it joined far too many historic buildings downtown in becoming a parking lot.

Theater is not demolished, although it’s very hard to tell it was ever there. Page 119 of the NRHP listing for downtown has a circa 1970 photo. Recessed entry under three small arches, and no marquee, just the name painted across the front (where it says ‘Alpha Pawn’ now).

147 is the low, wide building on the right of the street view. From the back, it appears to have had another story, although the entire back has very large ‘warehouse’ windows. Either E Main got renumbered, or the auditorium was inside this large building, and almost certainly is gone.

Needs to be listed as open! The interior looks spectacular.

Looks like it was remodeled again in the early to mid ‘50s judging by the cars in the photos.

No, you can see there are multiple arched entries on the original Grand in the old postcard views. This only has one arch, and much smaller.

Sorry, this isn’t the jewelry store, either. It’s the red brick thing on the corner.

No address? Might still be there, a few of the older commercial buildings are deep enough.

Okay, this listing needs to be split. The picture is the Joy. The building now has a Liberty St address, but that’s because an entrance was placed on the side when it was converted to offices in 1989. The address when it was a theater would have been on E Marion St. The description is wrong, this was never county offices. 34 S Liberty is a block south, on the other side of the street. It is now the chancery court. No idea when the Cinema One closed.

Map marker is completely wrong. I’m not sure the building in the photo was the theater. The NRHP listing (which does have some typos/mistakes) lists the building at 108 W Main as a theater, then bowling alley. It was built 1888, vacant in 1987, and it’s been torn down. The building in the photo is 122 W Main, which is listed (incorrectly as 102) as being built in 1919 as a garage. The only copy of the listing I found is missing the photos, but I am pretty sure I’ve got this all straight. Looking at the building in the photo from the alley, the two story portion is only the very front. The rear is low and has a lot of windows. Not very theater-like. I’d say the photo is not the theater, and the listing should be changed to demolished.

Map marker is off by two blocks. I think this is where the Water Department building is now.

I think this has probably been demolished. There are only two old buildings on E Vine, and one is from 1876. 15 E Vine might be closer to the right age, but it really doesn’t look like a theater.

Yeah, I can’t figure out that facebook page. It’s a complete mess. The title picture is the one in St. Louis, as are a few of the event photos. Getting FB to correct anything like that is a complete nightmare.

Does this ever host any performances or show any films? Doesn’t seem to have a web page. Should probably be listed as closed.

The Yazoo is listed in the 1979 NRHP listing as 106 S Main, and a construction date of 1925 is given.

SethG commented about Joy Theatre on Oct 7, 2017 at 6:31 pm

Actually, the address might belong to a theater mentioned in the NRHP listing, but it was not called the Joy. The photo is on Marion, not Liberty. The note in the historic district writeup for 34 S Liberty says it’s a commercial building from the ‘20s, converted to the 'Cinema One’ in the ‘80s. It has obviously since closed.

There’s another theater at 303 S Main. Just the shell remains, and the inside is some sort of park. Can’t put a name to it, but if anyone knows, we should add it.

SethG commented about Magnolia Theatre on Oct 7, 2017 at 1:22 pm

Streetview needs adjustment. Since it’s called the Magnolia Civic Center (with a horrible new fake stucco front), I assume the Cine was the Magnolia (typo ‘Magnolis’ in the description).

Comparing the pictures I took in 2010, you can see that a lot of the windows have been replaced in the McWilliams building (taller structure on the right side). Hopefully work will continue. Seems a lot of new restaurants, etc. have opened since I was there. I did notice that some of the wall had crumbled, and I’m surprised at how much damage it caused.
