THE ESQUIRE SIGNAGE - Architectural Signage: Since at least the 19th century, raised lettering has been a permanent feature on public, commercial, and private buildings, including banks and hotels.
These were often cut into stone or raised in cement render, with metal letters becoming more popular in the mid-20th century.
Movable Type Printing: The most significant historical use of raised metal letters was in the invention and development of movable type printing. Johannes Gutenberg is often credited in the West for perfecting the technique in the 1450s, creating individual, reversed, and raised metal characters for mass production of texts
