CHELSEA’S NEW THEATRE - PLAZA OPENS SATURDAY DECEMBER 19, 1936
Source - Plaza chelsea Frankston and Somerville Standard (Vic) Friday 11 December 1936 page 7 . Chelsea’s.new theatre, the Plaza, will be officially opened on Saturday, December 19, in the presence of the Mayor Cr. Baillie and councillors of the City of Chelsea. Previously known as the Victory (opp. Chelsea station), the building has been modernised on the latest lines.
The two main considerations of the architect who redesigned the theatre were comfort of patrons and ideal acoustics. The hundreds who will throng the Plaza on the opening night (and every night) will find that Chelsea now possesses a theatre equal to that of any other suburb. The management has been fortunate in se- curing the champagne of all screen musical comedies for the opening night and the following Monday and Tuesday, Broadway Melody of 1986, featuring Jack Benny, Eleanor Powell, and Robert Taylor. A happy picture replete with comedy, melody and grandeur.
The Plaza will certainly have a happy premiere. The supporting pictures are of the highest class, and the entire programme is suitable for general exhibition.
On Wednesday and Thursday, December 23 and: 24, Wheeler and Woolsey, Hollywood’s greatest comedians, will be featured in The Rainmakers. It’s a scream. The other feature picture is Another Face, starring Wallace Ford, Brian Don Levy, and Phyllis Brooks. An unusual story which will set a high standard for future programmes at the Plaza.
The opening night at the Plaza will be a memorable event in the history of the progress of Chelsea. Be wise and reserve-phone Chelsea 130.
