Embassy Cinema Fareham

Photograph of Architect David Nye responsible for building the Embassy Fareham. The front entrance being very narrow Nye used giant red letters surmounted over the entrance canopy, at night were illuminated by mauve neon which also ran down the centre of the three Portland stone fins on the facade. A similar style of lettering he used on a previous cinema he built the ‘Embassy’ Peterborough opening 1st November 1937. Nye built seventeen cinemas between November 1935 – November 1939 six of these were for Shipman & King and eleven in partnership with Mollo & Egan. After the war in 1948 Nye was the build a brand new cinema in Rye for Shipman & King to replace their bombed cinema in East Sussex named the ‘Regent’ which was very much in the 1930’s Art Deco style, opening 11th March 1948. This was to be the last complete new cinema Nye built, however, he continued until the late 1950’s renovating, repairing and alteration to many pre-war existing cinemas.
