Carolina Theatre 181 N. Church Street, Spartanburg, SC - 1956
On February 9, 1956, a 21-year-old Elvis Presley performed four sold-out shows at the Carolina Theater, located inside the historic Montgomery Building in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
The shows took place at 3:15 PM, 5:15 PM, 7:15 PM, and 9:15 PM.Touring Package: Elvis was not yet the singular headliner he would soon become. Many audience members bought tickets to see traditional country acts like the Louvin Brothers, Justin Tubb, and Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters.
He performed alongside his original backing musicians, “The Blue Moon Boys,” featuring Scotty Moore on guitar and Bill Black on bass.
The theater was housed within the iconic Montgomery Building on North Church Street in downtown Spartanburg.
The theater closed its doors in the mid-1970s. While the auditorium itself remains a historic shell, the landmark Montgomery Building has since undergone major historic renovations to save the structure.Legacy:
