Mighty Mouse cartoons were immensely popular at the underground Times Newsreel Theatrette in Melbourne, Australia, because they were a staple of the continuous, one-hour loop programs known as “Hour Shows”.
Located beneath the Melba (later Liberty/Odeon) Theatre on Bourke Street, the Times Theatrette opened in 1932 as Melbourne’s very first newsreel cinema. These short-form theaters depended heavily on action-packed, fast-paced content to entertain city shoppers, commuters, and workers looking to pass an hour.
The theatrical shorts of Mighty Mouse (originally introduced by Terrytoons in 1942 as a Superman parody) perfectly fit this format. They provided quick, highly visual, and high-energy entertainment alongside news coverage and weekly updates.
