Demolition begins in 1971 for construction by the NSW Government Insurance Office of a new 22-story office block ‘The St James Centre’ which celebrated its 50th birthday in 2026. Here several of the top floor have already gone. Before the corporate collapse in the late 60s MGM had considered their own new office block for the site featuring two new theaters named St James and Metro. So either way it would seem the St James Theatre, that we old-timers fondly remember, was destined for destruction.
