St. James Theatre
MGM was famous for its big musicals - this was effectively the last. The original Robert Donat/Greer Garson version of James Hilton’s “Goodbye Mr Chips’ opened at the St James 26 July 1939. Thirty years later Leslie Bricusse’s. new musical version with Peter O’Toole and Petula Clark opened 15 January 1970 and ran 15 weeks. In March 1969, as something of a last gasp, MGM had upgraded their Northside suburban Manly Metro with magnetic stereo sound and refurbishments. A new policy opened major attractions simultaneously with the St James starting with “The Shoes of the Fisherman”.
