RKO held Australian distribution rights to Walt Disney productions for many years, with Hoyts being their main exhibition outlet. When RKO folded in the late 1950s MGM took over the Disney franchise here and naturally used its own theaters as premiere venues. The live action “Old Yeller” (1957) was the first Disney Studio title to show at the St James opening 18 December 1958.
