St. James Theatre

By the time of its Australasian Premiere at the St James on Tuesday 30 April 1940 MGM knew “Gone With The Wind” would be a smash hit, it was just a matter of maximizing returns. It was opened simultaneously at both of Metro’s Sydney city theaters at advanced admission prices. With the ‘heat’ off after 8 weeks the St James resumed normal programming, while the Liberty continued on until 24 December 1940 – a run there of 34 weeks. On 10 January 1941 its exclusive city season resumed at Greater Union’s Victory where it showed until 27 November – 46 weeks. It’s first run therefore totaled 88 weeks. GWTW would return to the St James (and many other Sydney theaters) numerous times over subsequent decades. It was fittingly chosen as the final night attraction when the St James closed Saturday 20 March 1971.
