Main Image: Most of the St James and David Jones building site looking south 27 February 1925 seemingly taken from the roof of Fullers Building in Elizabeth Street. The white building top just left of center still exists on the SE corner of Market and Castlereagh Streets. Inset is identified as Mr ‘A.’ Fuller (but is probably John) standing upon the first steel girder being placed in position. After withdrawing their initial offer of £75,000 due to John’s cold feet, this end of the school site was eventually purchased from David Jones by the Fuller Brothers for £100,000 in early 1922 as they faced eviction from the Grand Opera House. DJs had bought the entire school site on 12 February 1920 for £124,000 at an auction where rival bidders were theatrical entrepreneurs the Tait Brothers, who had plans for a playhouse on the property. David Jones combined the remainder of the school site with a previously purchased adjoining area on Market Street to create their shop location.
