Robert Cromie ( 1887 – 1971) celebrated cinema Architect of the Ritz cinema, who was responsible for building 63 cinemas and theatres, most of which were built from the late 1920’s until 1939. His offices were situated at 35 Baker Street, London W1. It was from here where at the peak of his output employed over fifty draughtsmen, who were responsible for all his detailed plans and perspective drawings some of which were finished in watercolour. Three of his largest cinema’s being the 3,900 seated Davis Theatre Croydon, opening December 1928 followed by the Art Deco Gaumont Palace Hammersmith 3,500 seats, opening March 1932 and the decorative ancient Egyptian interior, Plaza Southampton with 2,000 seats opening October 1932.
