Regal Cinema Southampton

Regal cinema Southampton was built for the County Cinema Circuit who were incorporated in July 1927 with Charles John Donada as Managing Director, a man with a mission to drive the company forward quickly from 1927 purchasing existing and important new build cinemas until 1936. The Regal was to be a new build whilst the Plaza Northam was an existing cinema taken over. Both were controlled through County’s holding company Regal (Southampton) Ltd,. Donada engaged the firm Verity & Beverly who were well known at the time as foremost cinema Architects, they had been selected by the American ‘Paramount’ film studios to build their seven Paramount Theatres around the country, two of which the Paramount Newcastle and Paramount Leeds were the most palatial cinema buildings ever built. The above photograph was taken at a General Managers meeting in the gardens of Donada’s home in 1934 Donada is standing in the back row wearing a white jumper.
