Savoy (Keith's/Opera House), Tremont St. Entrance, 1982

The since-demolished Tremont St. entrance of the Savoy (B.F. Keith Memorial/RKO Keith’s/Opera House), Summer, 1982. Not familiar with Boston theaters at the time, I had no idea that there was another entrance to the same theater on the other side of the block. I would have of course discovered the Paramount, Mayflower, State, and others had I ventured further, but that day I only photographed the Savoy, Astor, Saxon, Schubert, and Metropolitan (for some reason I neglected to shoot the Wilbur). I had done no research ahead of time, and was traveling with friends who were not theater buffs.

Before becoming an assistant manager, I was a porter for the Savoy in 1972. I would sweep from the Tremont Entrance across the alley and through the hallway to Washington St. They didn’t use the box office on Tremont St. when I was there. Sack owned an apartment building with an entrance in the alley. I remember cleaning those apartments. I think they were rented hourly.
