Demolishing of Rialto during August 1985. The Rialto went into demolition with all fixtures and fittings still in situ, above can be seen seats and light fittings amongst the rubble, also the two ‘Trentcrete’ bas-relief panels on the facade of the Rialto too met their fate in demolition. The great loss of these stone panels were made more problematic by their weight, position, costs and the fact that they were built into the facade and there would have been great difficulty in removing without damage. Whereas at the Gaumont Palace Hammersmith another Cromie theatre I am pleased to say that all twenty two signed bas-relief panels by Newby Abbot Trent depicting scenes from Bioscope, Muses of Music and dancing, being the largest group of works by this artist still in their original frieze were saved in perpetuity when the entire building was Statutory listed Grade II* on 26th July 2004.
