Rialto Cinema Maidenhead

Rialto auditorium 1953 very little has changed except the front stage heavy crimson velvet curtains have been replaced by gold satin festoon style. Still remaining are the pendant light fittings manufactured by F. H. Pride of London. Prides were well known by cinema architects and interior designers, complete with their own large design department headed by Charles Theobald who not only designed innovative lighting, but glass console’s for cinema organs. Prides also produced designs for Compton and many other organs such as the ‘Cascade’ and ‘Rainbow’ complete with multi changing colours. Sadly unlike America where many organs have been saved and restored the UK has only a handful that survive in their original installation. The most elaborate console surrounds ever designed by Theabold was for the Plaza (later ABC) Worthing.
