Odeon Campsie 283 Beamish Street, Campsie, Sydney, NSW

Located in the Campsie district west of Sydney. Began as an open-air theatre in 1906. This was roofed over in 1912 and ran until 1923 when it was rebuilt as the Excelsis Theatre, re-opening on 1st February 1923.

Greater Union Theatres took over in 1948, a year in which many theatres were to be christened Odeons, the western suburbs equivalent of the Kings circuit. The design by Guy Crick featured a large, plain but commanding facade and an unusual flowing Streamline Moderne style for the interior.

The last film shown was Judy Garland in “The Wizard of Oz” on 20th January 1972. The Odeon was demolished and replaced by a shopping arcade, the Campsie Mall - Notes by John Gleeson
