Regal Cinema Biggleswade

Photograph taken August 1936 showing auditorium of the Regal which held 750 seats and Café, the Architect Arthur Singleton designed cinemas for independent owners from the early 1930’s usually in the Art Deco style. Singleton’s offices were located at Burgess Hill and had previously designed the Norfolk cinema in nearby Shoreham-by-Sea opening 27th March 1933. The Regal was sold to the Cox Cinema Co. Ltd., in 1937 when the Café was closed. After the War a new wider screen was installed and later in the early 1960’s Cinemascope. The Star Group purchased the Regal in 1972 and two years later sold to the Regent Leisure Group, who started bingo with films. The final film was the ‘Return of the Pink Panther’ starring Peter Sellers on Saturday 26th April 1976.
