Mayfair Theatre 25a Stephen Street, Bunbury, WA

Description - In 1965, Kaye Gobby and the girls from Bunbury Tech College had to fess up to their Headmaster Mr Deadman that they were late back to class because they had been to see rock star Johnny O'Keefe in concert and they realised their photo would appear in the Newspaper.

Kaye shows us her photo that was taken that day on the steps of the old Mayfair Theatre in Stephen Street! She is the one having an autograph signed by JOK!

Johnny O'Keefe was a dreamboat 30 years old at the time when he played in Bunbury. The Mayfair Theatre also hosted many other events. It is now the location of the Commonwealth Bank in Stephen Street.)

Johnny was known as “The Wild One”, the first Australian rock star to tour the United States, and the first Australian artist to make the local Top 40 charts. He had twenty-nine Top 40 hits in Australia between 1958 and 1973. He passed away at the age of 43 from a drug overdose
