The Plaza Theatre in Mornington, originally opened in the late 1920s as a movie theatre, was known for showing talking pictures and was paired with the Frankston Plaza.
It was initially named “Plaza Talkies” and was a large venue with a stage, dance floor, and upstairs area, hosting not only movies but also social events, debutante balls, concerts, and meetings.
Later, it was renamed the Matthew Flinders Theatre after a major refit in the 1950s, which included tiling the foyer and adding a depiction of Matthew Flinders' voyage. The Plaza Theatre is also associated with the Plaza Cafe, which was next door and had an interconnected entrance area where people could book theatre seats.
