Some notes - 1932 – REGENT THEATRE – previously Hyde Park Theatre, grand reopening with talkies Wed 12 Oct 1932, under the sole direction of J. A. Feldt. (TDB Wed 12 Oct 1932)

The Regent picture theatre was located on Charters Towers Road on the corner of Oxford Street. It was a popular location for soldiers to take their girl friends during WW2. One such soldier was Military Policemen Comer Richardson from Company D of the 800th Military Police Battalion who were based in Queens Park, North Ward. The Hermit Park Hotel is located nearby on the other side of Charters Towers Road.

The Regent Theatre building still exists today, in the form of the offices for Roberts Nehmer McKee Lawyers. If you look at the building from a distance back along Charters Towers Road towards Mundingburra you will see the original curved roof of the old picture theatre behind the building improvements meant to hide its former existence.

I used to visit The Regent every Saturday afternoon when I was at primary school in Townsville to go to the matinee movies. It was then owned by the Feldt Brothers from memory. - © Peter Dunn 2015
