A little history and a mystery art mural that I now think was part of the Gem theatre, before it was remodeled into the Howard theatre!
March 1914 Sanborn Map Company information lists it as a feed/grocery store with 6 wood posts down the middle (the posts are still standing) and cold storage in the back of the building. There is a dashed line on July of 1919 indicating some type of divider, but not a permanent wall. March 1930 Sanborn maps show the addition of wire glass skylights, however no other change.
This art mural must have been added to the permanent wall when divided in 1930 and before the renovations in 1939. It is located behind two walls, the office wall and the Howard wall. The mural depicts a landscape will hills, trees, and even a house. A signature or name could not be located. Some of the paint appears to have run at the bottom of the mural…I have talked to several building owners downtown that say sometimes the inside walls sweat or leak.
