A magical moment in Woodstock happened on June 13, 1990, when a special benefit preview screening of Warren Beatty’s “Dick Tracy” was held at the hometown of Chester Gould. A reception at the Bull Valley Golf Club was also presented right afterward.
The guy dressed as Tracy is Tim Harrison, not Warren himself. And nope, Beatty was not there, and not even the material girl as well. However, the daughter and grandson of Gould, Jean Gould O'Connell and Tracy O'Connell, attended the event and screening as well.
Inside the theater, ushers dressed in red and white uniforms complete with gloves and pill-box hats seated the people and welcomed them with special words sung to the tune of “It’s Howdy Doody Time”.
In April 1990, after a special committee headed by Cav Peterson began setting plans for Woodstock’s event at the time “Tracy Days”, word came with Disney and Touchstone to turn down their request for a local premiere in Woodstock, but postcards and letters prompted them to change its mind.
Local retailer Rob Knuth won a pair of tickets for his innovative Dick Tracy window decorations as part of a Woodstock Chamber of Commerce contest, who tried unsuccessfully to buy the $100 tickets. Howard and Eleanor Fiedelman of Woodstock won a pair of tickets through a Jewel-Osco promotion, and one lucky son also won a seat as well.
