Thank You, Film Forum for the fantastic presentation of “The Creature From The Black Lagoon”. The digital restoration and 3-D were eye-popping, to say the least. (as was, of course the beautiful Ms. Adams.) It was great to see a film where the 3-D became a important part of the plot and not just an “add-on”. Once again, kudos to FF.

GDellaFa, I was in attendance at this past weekend’s “Sean Connery/50 Years of Bond” weekend when the October film program was announced. On Oct. 26th and 27th FOL is presenting a program called,“Horror:the Ways You Like IT” with such featured films as, “Carnival of Souls”, “Murders In The Rue Morgue” (Lugosi)“Dracula” (Hammer)“The Horror of Dracula” and “The Sentinel” Sounds like the web site needs an update.

Hi Peter,

I know it was mentioned last Saturday, but what are the films for this year’s Horror-Thon ?

I believe the web site has been updated, recently. There appears to be some Sean Connery films scheduled for Sept. 28th and 29th. You might want to give the site a look. Hope you find something you like.

Hi Peter,

Thank you for the great rousing season-opener with “The Guns of Navarrone” this morning… had a great time. Peter, may I ask a question ? Is there a different-mail (other than the Cinema Treasure board) that I can use to contact you regarding some questions I have about the Lafayette, in general ? Thanks, I hope I can touch base with you soon. Bob

Hi FeverDog, So sorry to hear about the closing of the Summit. This is the place where much of my “mis-spent” youth was taken up with the likes of the old Universal and Hammer horror films during the hey-days of the kiddie matinees. Even though (up until about a month ago) I used to drive past there every day, I never realized it was being “gutted”. Very sad. But, I guess there is some consolation that the great Loews Jersey at Journal Square (one of my other “haunts” as a kid) is still a functioning movie theatre and Arts Center.

Is it too early to start anticipating what the Fall film series might have in store? Any word yet?

Hi Peter, Great way to end the Spring season. “The Woman In the Window”, interesting , low-key thriller. Thoroughly engrossing rarely-seen Edward G. Robinson. (Now, how about “Red House”?) Did Nelson happen to mention when the fall BSC season opener would be? Sept, Oct.? (I know too early too tell, but BSC always leaves you “clamoring for more”) As always, great job guys.

Hi FOL, Just checked your film schedule. Are there any films scheduled for the end of this month, or are skipping straight to June?

Hi Peter, Great line up for the Spring season of BSC. Always great to have a Peter Sellers/Woody Allen film in the line up. Are fine 35mm prints getting hard to come buy? I notice there six films for the Spring season as compared to the usual 12 or 13. Will BSC classics be relying more on digital presentations as time goes by ?

Peter, Has a date in April been set yet for the Spring Season opener for Big Screen Classics?

I’d love to have another “Bond” weekend. We haven’t had one in about two years, I believe.

I’m looking forward to the Coen Brothers weekend. (I hope the FOL schedules a presentation from either the editor of Cinema Retro magazine or Dr. Hirsch). How does the remainder of the film season look (through June)? Any advance previews?

What a great month it’s been at The landmark Loews. First “Cinema Paradiso” (in a beautiful print) and then, last night “The Hustler” with four stellar performances and a live interview with Piper Laurie. Now this is what I call “film programming” !

This (as Carl Denham would say) is turning into a “theme song”, but, my son and I went to see “The Artist” last Wed. at the Clairidge and it took two patrons to “complain” about the house lights left on during the opening of the film before an “annoyed” house employee angrily “switched off” the lights. A real shame, because I still love this place.

Besides the Clairidge and the Kinnelon “Arts” cinema, are there any other theaters in North Jersey that show “indie” films on a regular basis?

Robert Kratky
Robert Kratky commented about Clairidge on Jan 1, 2012 at 4:30 pm

Yes, Moviebuff. The AMC Garden State 16 in Paramus seems to pay attention to those important little “details” as well. Attendants always wait until those of us who enjoy reading the credits are on our way out and send us on our way with a friendly “have a great day”. Perhaps it’s the little things that keeps this venue “packed” most of the time. (even the first shows of the day.) And with a price policy of $6.00 on films (I believe)before 5 P.M., nothing much to complain about.

Sorry for the late post, but in response to Moviebuff182 post of Dec. 29 from last year, I experienced almost the same situation just three days ago at a screening of “Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy” Just as the credits started to roll, the house flood lights came up and the movie attendants started sweeping up the popcorn at our feet well before anyone had a chance to leave. Somewhat inconsiderate ??

Hi Peter, May I take this moment to wish you and Nelson and the entire Lafayette family a very happy and peaceful holiday sesaon. Thank you for a terrific fall Big Screen Classics season. (“Wichester ‘73” was a first for me.) As always, looking forward to the Spring Season. Do I have my facts straight, you’ll be back in February?

I’ve loved this theater for well over thirty years but lately I’ve been very disappointed by the way this place is run. Looked forward to seeing “Annymous” this week only to discover, after making the trip from Wayne that the film was cancelled due to projection “failure” and that the film was not being brought back the following week. Very frustrating as I only get the chance to make it into Montclair about once or twice a month. (I guess this was not a “high demand” film.)

The Summit in Union City is still open… showing current films. But it has been sub-divided into a Tri-Plex (Yuk!) More than likely not the same theater that many of us enjoyed during the 60’s and 70’s.

One of the few theatres that still maintains the great retro atmosphere of the past is the Loew’s Jersey in Jersey City… still operational for films on a monthly basis and live shows. Worth a look.

Hi Peter, This year’s Horror-Thon seems to be one of the best (and most varied) ever. Really looking forward to “Mysterious Island” (my first Harryhausen on the big screen in ‘61) with the 5.1 soundtrack. And of course that double-feature!!

I really wouldn’t worry too much about the ‘short-comings’ of “Hound of The Baskervilles” (MGM had a really nice print for their DVD release in 2002, I wonder what happened to those elements ?)… Cushing’s Holmes always is a standout and, second only to his “Baron Frankenstein” outings will always rank among his best performances. And that finale on the moors (no spoilers, here!)… right up there with the confrontation at the end of “Horror of Dracula”

Keep those Hammers coming every Halloween. They’re wonderful on the big screen. Bob

Hi Peter, Is the Saturday evening “double feature” (Horrorthon) considered a one tiket admission for both films or is each film a separate admission ?

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Peter, Will GUNS be the first film of the new season? (Hoping to start off the new year with a “Bang”, I see… sorry it’s been one of those days!) Looking forward to the 4-track presentation of the Tiomkin score! And what can be said about “The Uninvited”? Arguably, along with “The Innocents” and “The Haunting” one of the best ghost stories ever filmed.

Hi Peter,

I hope all is well with the town of Suffern and that the Lafayette made it safely through Irene’s passing.
