The Brookhurst is now owner/operated by Starplex Cinemas (A Dallas based company that merged with Interstate Theatres in 2005). The company is backed by Leroy Mitchell, founder/former owner of Cinemark. Interstate was a subsiderary of Cinemark, became an independant entity when Cinemark was sold, then merged with Starplex (which was owned by L. Mitchell’s brother). The company operates a few first run theatres (in Texas), but specializes in discount houses. The Brookhurst was the company’s second California theatre, La Mirada being the first, and they went on to reopen theatres in Bakersfield and Irvine. Apparently, this company is making a go of reopening old multiplexs as discount houses.

In addition to being in close proximity to the film industry, the Century City theatre was also, quite literaly, in the shadow of AMC’s west division offices (located in the Century Plaza towers). As such, this theatre was a flagship location; testing out every new idea/technology, holding test screenings, hosting VIPs, housing the west division academy (ie. gm school), etc. The special demands of managing this theatre were such that there was an extra yearly bonus handed out for working at the Century 14.

Following a corporate realignment, the West division offices were closed and the Century 14 became less central in the company’s west coast operations.

Sadly, there wasn’t much to save by the time they demolished the main structure. After standing vacant for nearly a decade, the auditorium ceiling had partially collapsed and one too many New England winters had taken their toll (North street’s Palace and Showplace theatres met similar fates). Equally sad, the Capital was driven out of business by the strip mall multiplex, Cinema Center (now closed itself).

“Captain Blood” lost their/his lease in early Spring 0f 2005. The theatre was picked up by the Starplex Cinemas chain (a large nation wide chain, based out of Dallas, TX.). Under Starplex’s management, the theatre was closed and almost completely renovated. Beyond cosmetic changes to the lobby and hallways (gone is Blood’s high school haunted house theme), the projectors, soundsystems, seating, curtains, fixtures, etc. were replaced. Additionally, a new management/staff team was put in place. The current theatre operates as a “mid run” (movies which have been in circulation for 3 – 4 weeks) venue.

The theatre is now upgraded to modern standards (minus stadium seating) and called Starplex Woodbridge 5.
