Opera House

The Albemarle Opera House is located above several downtown businesses in Albemarle, North Carolina. It held live performances from 1908 to 1913 then was converted to a movie theater for the 1914 and 1915 seasons. After several seasons of disuse it became an annex to the undertaker’s shop that was next door. The space has been empty and unused for 70 or so years.

I’ve located a website maintained by the person who now owns it; he evidently operates the shop beneath it.

In my experience of searching through theaters, I’ve never before seen one with an entrance to a second floor auditorium. Maybe I’ve just not looked in the right places.

The Opera house is across the street from this building and is above two stores. Starnes Jewelery Store opened before the building was built and moved into the current store when the Starnes family finished this building
