Roxy Cinema

Located on the Meir, which is the premier shopping street in Antwerp, which contains many fine buildings, this originally opened in the 1890’s, as the Theatre des Varieties.

In 1927, it became the Roxy Cinema, and on 16th February 1930, it screened the first talking film (with sound on film) in Antwerp. The film “Accuse Levez-Vous” was made by the French Gaumont company. The Roxy Cinema was equipped with a Standaart 3Manual/11Rank organ, which had a piano attachment. The cinema also boasted a cafe-restaurant for the convenience of its patrons.

The Roxy Cinema was closed in 1962. It was demolished and a C & A department store was built on the site.
