Previous Names: Everybody's Theatre
Built in 1925 as the Everybody’s Theatre, it was later renamed Regent Theatre. It became a two screen cinema in 1984, when a 99 seat theatrette was built in the old council offices on the 2nd floor. The main theatre originally held 600, and when the foyer was enlarged the seating was reduced to 400.
The main theatre stopped operating as a cinema in 1992 when the screen was damaged during a live performace that was being held on the stage. It re-opened in 2009, the theatrette has operated non-stop since 1984.
Closed by earthquake damage on 3rd September 2010, it was repaired and reopened, but closed again in November 2011, awaiting seismic studies.
