Englewood Cinema 1 & 2 Grand Opening March 1972

A new dimension in motion picture entertainment made its debut on March 31, 1972 as the Cinema 1 & 2 theatre, located in the Englewood Square Shopping Center. This new theatre was Rocky Mount’s first ever automated twin theatre and the town’s first indoor twin theatre in eastern North Carolina under Charlotte based Stewart and Everett theatre chain. Cinema 1 & 2 upon its grand opening was the first to offer rocking chair seating that had a capacity for 600 in both auditoriums (300 in each). This cinema had acres of free parking.

Stewart and Everett operated the Cinema 1 & 2 until 1986 when Carmike Cinemas took over as an acquisition of all Stewart and Everett theatres, including the Oakwood Cinema, which had opened in 1977. This theatre brought to Rocky mount some of Hollywood’s best films first-run until it faced stiff competition from the Golden East Crossing Cinemas, which put this cinemas venue from showing first-rin films to become a second-run discount house until it closed in 1996. As a result of newer and bigger multiplex cinemas that were taking over, the Englewood Cinema was demolished and replaced by a Wachovia Full Service Bank which is now a Wells Fargo Bank.

Stewart and Everett also had another twin cinema that operated in the town…one of two theatres that were in Rocky Mount. One was the Englewood Twin, aka Cinema 1 & 2,and the other was the Oakwood Twin which is NOT listed on this site that opened around 1975 or 1976.

This was my first theatre as manager. Later opened Oakwood twin in 1977. Stewart & Everett Theatres were bought by Carmike Cinemas in 1986. Would like to hear from anyone that worked at these theatres in the 70’s and early 80’s.

Both the Englewood and Oakwood Cinemas were demolished and replaced by banks (Wachovia-now Wells Fargo-replaced the Englewood and Southern Bank replaced the Oakwood).
