This very short-lived cinema, the city’s second, opened on 14 September 1908 but closed only a year later in 1909. A conversion of a public house and billiards saloon, by owner James W. Gayle, after closure as a cinema the building reverted to beer and billiards, and a non-cinema venture known as the Star Theatre of Varieties, presumably a rather modest affair. In recent times most of Church Street has been cleared to create the new Cathedral Square, and the precise site of the Star Picture House cannot now be discerned.
