According to local history, the American Theatre, in the Custer Hotel building, was opened in 1918, predating the Main Theatre, which opened in December of 1940. The theatre was also listed on the Sanborn Insurance Maps of 1921.

The Mackay Miner reported that the American Theatre closed in 1952 but by 1954 it was open again, leased by Dave Wiks and Nelan Sayer. In May of 1954 Mr. And Mrs. Fred Diers purchased the hotel and theatre from the Steve Murgic estate and honored the previous lease. The 1945 Film Daily Year Book listed the American Theatre with 869 seats but by 1950 seating had been reduced to 275.

The theatre partially collapsed during the October 28, 1983, Mt. Borah earthquake and within days, it was completely demolished by the National Guard as a safety hazard.
