The Rex Theatre opened on May 26, 1925, with Sid Chaplin in “Charlie’s Aunt". The location was on the east side of the square, next to the old court house. On July 25, it was reported in the local news that the theatre was installing the latest Seeburg pipe organ. The organ was especially made for smaller theatres and was the second one of this design shipped to Texas.

After the opening of the Texan Theatre on August 11, 1933, the Rex Theatre dropped out of the listings. The Journal reported in October of 1933 that professional boxing matches were now being held in the former Rex Theatre. At that time the only theatres advertising in the Journal were the Lindsey Theatre, Lyric Theatre, Palace Theatre, and Texan Theatre.

Today the 1100 block of Avenue G, no longer exists and was replaced by the county jail.
