The Independently operated Downtown Cinema opened on March 25, 1970. The space had since February been the Cine Mexico and before that, shops.
On December 23, 1970, the two-screen Downtown Cinemas had its grand opening. The diverse double feature playing on one screen was “Scrooge” and “Grand Prix,” which would have kept moviegoers glued to their seats for five hours.
Still an independent, the Downtown Cinemas closed after 1977 and has long disappeared under Phoenix’s downtown skyline.
