Epic Cinema

Opened in the early-1980’s, EPIC (Ellesmere Port Indoor Centre), was once the town’s main leisure centre. It was located on the edge of the town’s Central Business District, at the junction of McGarva Way and Stanney Lane. It provided many activities, mainly sports, including swimming, squash, badminton, volleyball, weight-lifting, roller skating, sauna - but there was also a small, part-time cinema.

However, in 2014 a ground breaking ceremony was held on the site of the brand new Ellesmere Port Sport and Leisure Village, to mark the start of construction at Cheshire West and Chester Council’s flagship leisure development. This is also listed as being on Stanney Lane, but on a different site. The Epic stands unused and boarded up in 2015.

Funded by Cheshire West and Chester Council and Sport England, the new 6,000 sq. m building has been designed by Ellis Williams to replace EPIC and provide enhanced leisure facilities for the town.

Facilities at the new centre include an eight-court sports hall with a seating capacity for 1,400, an eight-lane 25m swimming pool, an 80-station gym and dance and fitness studios - but no cinema!
