The Aztec Theatre originally opened with two 300-seat screens on May 19, 1976 by Commonwealth Theatres who ran it until it was sold to United Artists in 1987.

In August of 1990 it was reported that Allen Theatres was buying 11 new Mexico locations from United Artists, including two in Gallup.

Three more screens were added and in 2015 it was still operated by Allen Theatres. It was closed on April 11, 2019.
