The Mechanics Institute Hall opened in 1912. In 1926 the town of Onslow was moved from the mouth of the Ashburton River to a new location at Beadon Point. The Mechanics Institute was moved to the new town at the corner of Hooley Avenue and McGrath Avenue. The hall was completely demolished in the cyclone of 28th March 1934, and was rebuilt substanially the same as before. It is not clear if movies were screened in the hall, but there was movies screened in a Picture Gardens(next to the hall?)-(dates of operation unknown?).

In 1972 new offices for the West Pilbara Shire(now Shire of Ashburton) were constructed, as a facade of the Mechanics Institute Hall. Movies are no longer screened in Onslow? The Hall and Asburton Shire Offices and Onslow Public Library burnt down on 13th January 2013(arson by kids). A new Hall and Asburton Shire Offices, and Onslow Public Library was opened in 2015 or 2016.
