The $500,000 Capitol Theatre took 17 months to build beginning in April of 1920 and launching with “The Passion Flower” on September 8, 1921 along with the short subjects of “The Love Egg,” a Pathé newsreel and “The Runaway Train.”
The Capitol Theatre opened using elements of the Grand Theatre which closed with a farewell week June 24-30, 1920. The Grand Theatre had opened as the Grand Opera House on September 11, 1873. It closed in the first week of August of 1913 re-emerging as the Grand Theatre.
Hoffman-Henon architected the Capitol Theatre project for the Wilmer and Vincent Circuit. Early audiences were impressed with the $35,000 pipe organ and the work by the Italian designers. The 1,200 lower floor seats were 35 cents and the upper 1,200 were 25 cents at opening.
The Capitol Theatre was still open in 1941, but had closed by 1943.
