The Bijou Theatre launched in December of 1907 in downtown Shippensburg as one of its earliest movie theatres. It opened in a building dated back to 1854 when it housed Rudy’s Hall. J.C. Light took on the venue in 1910 and would change its name to the Lyric Theatre on a 25-year lease. It closed at end of lease in 1935.

The theatre was taken on by Notpoulos & Gribble who revamped the theatre relaunching as the State Theatre on December 30, 1935 on a 20-year lease. The theatre now had an RCA sound system and opened with Joan Crawford in “I Live My Life”.

As the theatre was getting toward its end of lease, a July 4th, 1954 fire gutted the building. John M. and Mary K. Plasterer took on the theatre giving it a CinemaScope screen. It reopened May 12, 1955. The Plasterers then traded the C.V. Theatre for the long-running Victory Theatre owned by Frank E. Hollar, Jr. Hollar closed the C.V. Theatre on January 19, 1958 and the Plasterers continued the Victory Theatre’s run.

This web page says that the CV Theatre closed on January 19, 1958. It also claims that the Bijou opened in 1904. Here is a Google street view of the building, now long occupied by Shippen Cleaners, at 47 S. Earl Street.
