Cobridge Picture Hall

Cobridge is an area of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. On 30th July 1912 Stoke Borough Council was asked to approve plans for the conversion of a schoolhouse into a picture hall. Their decision was deferred, while site visits were made and further enquiries were carried out, but a licence was eventually issued, and Cobridge Picture Hall opened, most likely on Monday 2nd September 1912.

An advertisement in the Sentinel newspaper the following day proclaimed that the building was now open: “Newly decorated, and fitted up in a most up-to-date manner, well ventilated, etc.” Charles Grant was the lessee.

In 1928, Robert Grant took over. Sometime in 1930 a Gyrotone sound system was installed (soon to be replaced with a British Acoustic(BA) system).

The final Cinematograph Licence was issued for 1934. No licence was applied for the following year and, on 4th December 1936, the Sentinel carried an advert for “Cobridge Hall: Dancing and whist”. CafĂ© concerts were also presented.

The building has remained in community use, most recently as St. Peter’s Club.
